Isn't selling fanfiction illegal?
Yes, very! Whether it's self-publishing on Amazon, or printing and bookbinding on Etsy, selling fanfiction is incredibly illegal and can get you (and fandom at large) in a lot of trouble.
However, most IP holders have some sort of fan content policy. Both Larian's and WOTC's policies state that artists can accept donations for fan content, so long as their work remains free and it's clear that they don't own the IP. Which, I don't, in case you were wondering.
Therefore, commissions are simply a way for me to work with someone on a custom story with the agreement that they will donate in order to compensate for my time and skill. Then, I post the fic free to the public on AO3.
